We had been running 2.5.9 without issue before attempting to upgrade.

Until this upgrade is fixed, I would really appreciate clear steps on reverting to 2.5.9

Could you try doing an "apt-get install libffi-dev" and then try the easy_install again?  That should get your past that error.  Let us know how it goes!

libffi-dev was already installed prior to the 2.5.10 upgrade.
